When temperatures start to drop in Central Texas, many homeowners might think they’re safe from the harsh winters experienced in other parts of the country. However, even mild winters in this region can still bring sudden freezes that pose a threat to your outdoor plumbing. Pipes that are exposed to cold temperatures, like those in outdoor faucets, irrigation systems, and hose bibs, can freeze, burst, and cause costly damage.

That's where a handyman comes in handy. Hiring a professional handyman to winterize your outdoor plumbing is a smart move that can save you time, money, and the hassle of dealing with burst pipes. Here's what you need to know about why winterizing your plumbing in Central Texas is essential and how a handyman can help.

The Importance of Winterizing Outdoor Plumbing

Even though Central Texas is known for its mild winters, the area can still experience occasional freezing temperatures, especially during sudden cold fronts or overnight lows. This can catch many homeowners off guard. While the daytime may bring pleasant weather, it’s the nighttime freezes that are most concerning.

When water freezes inside your pipes, it expands, creating pressure that can lead to cracks or bursts in the pipes. This can cause significant water damage to your property and lead to expensive repairs. Outdoor faucets, hose bibs, irrigation systems, and any exposed plumbing are particularly vulnerable to these conditions.

Taking steps to winterize your outdoor plumbing before the cold weather hits is key to avoiding these issues. If you don’t have the experience or time to do this yourself, hiring a handyman can ensure the job is done properly and thoroughly.

Testimonials

I contacted My Georgetown Handyman after reviewing their website. Over time I had been accumulating a list of "Honey Do" things needing attention around our house. I completed the form on their website and they got back to me right away. When Michael and Lisa came to our house the first time, I was very impressed as we went over all the items on our list. They asked lots of questions and took pictures. I told them there was no rush on getting this list whittled down and they could work us around their larger jobs. After receiving and approving the estimate, they got to work right away. Every job they completed was done correctly and the workmanship was all professional. We had work items varying from painting lawn furniture, re-staining and sealing patio benches, building shelves in a closet, repairing a toilet, hanging a mirror, replacing some rotting wood on our storage building and taking care of some landscaping items. Part of the work was accomplished by two different people from their team, and those items were also done to perfection. Everyone on this team is very professional, very friendly, courteous and always on time. They always cleaned up behind themselves and were respectful of our property. Communication throughout the entire process was spot on, and we definitely will use this company in the future. We've already recommended them to some friends and My Georgetown Handyman has already completed work for our neighbor. These are the kind of people you like to invite into your home!! Their goal is to make our lives easier and better!

Googled best handyman in Georgetown and this business came up first. Called and was impressed from the beginning. Appointment made, kept, not only professional but very personable. Georgetown Handyman did an amazing job on changing out a screened in patio, to a clean, clear, and wind resistant plexiglass enclosure. They were meticulous with their work, attention to detail while being very considerate to the homeowners. Service continued with making our patio climate friendly with a special intake/output fan. We now have a four season back porch that we will enjoy for years. The handyman services did not end there. Customized our bathtub for safety, as we are 70 and 72 years. old. Plus had a landscape team come out to dig and clean out the side of our home that had turned into the Grand Canyon with the wind, rain and floods. Leveled, pavers, rocks for safe walking that will not wash away. The service is top notch, professional, prompt, and very personable. They took the time with a couple of follow up visits, double checked the work that they had outsourced, along with hands on instruction for an electrical device. Did not leave until we answered their one question. Are you Happy? Highly recommend with 5+ stars.

This was the most professional service I have ever had for my home. I will keep My Georgetown Handyman on speed dial for all future repairs. Prompt & Reliable Service.

Loved working with this company! We called them in desperate need of some essential repairs, with only about week to work with. They were able to jump in and quickly take care of a long punch-list of items and our building looks fantastic! The repairs were well done and the crew was very knowledgeable, thorough and detail-oriented. Lisa, Michael and Albert were great to work with, very professional but also very relatable. It was a positive experience all the way around! Very grateful to have found this company!

Simply the best Handyman (+women) team to work with. They are very personable and make sure the task at hand is done right. And, they work very reasonably for the work accomplished. I had a heavy insulated pocket door that was not closing right and required a special tool to adjust it properly. They left to secure that tool and returned to get it right (required 2 trips), but there were no extra charges. While working here, they also proved their versatility by replacing an outdoor faucet that had been inoperative for a long time. It required a delicate touch as the faucet was stuck on the inner pipe, and it would have been a catastrophe if it had broken inside the rock wall. I will definitely call My Georgetown Handyman when other projects arise.

My Georgetown Handyman went above and beyond on my project in my home. I called them to come replace the batteries in my smoke alarms.

It turned out that my detectors were expired. They went to Home Depot got me new detectors and batteries. Came back the next morning and replaced all detectors. I would highly recommend them for any projects in my home.

"I found my handyman."

Wonderful experience. Very professional prompt estimate, and quick high quality work. I will be a returning customer for sure!

These guys are the best. They are great, honest, reliable and a joy to work with.

Our sliding glass door vertical blinds fell overnight, leaving our dining room and privacy exposed. Michael and Lisa fit us into their day, arrived that afternoon at our Sun City home, figured out the problem and remounted our drapes better than ever. A reasonable price and stellar service! We are lifelong fans!

What a Handyman Does to Winterize Outdoor Plumbing

A skilled handyman can handle all the necessary tasks to winterize your outdoor plumbing, ensuring everything is protected from the cold. Here’s what they typically do:

1. Shut off and Drain Outdoor Faucets

One of the most important steps in winterizing outdoor plumbing is to shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets and drain any remaining water. A handyman will locate the shut-off valve, typically located inside your home near the outdoor faucets, and turn it off. They will then open the faucet to allow any water left in the pipes to drain out. This prevents any water from sitting in the pipes, where it can freeze and cause damage.

2. Insulate Pipes and Faucets

To protect pipes and faucets from freezing temperatures, a handyman will wrap them in insulating materials, such as foam pipe covers or insulated faucet covers. These materials help to keep the pipes warm even when the temperatures drop. In some cases, a handyman may also recommend installing freeze-proof hose bibs, which are designed to prevent freezing even in colder conditions.

3. Winterize Irrigation Systems

Irrigation systems are another area of concern when it comes to winterizing outdoor plumbing. A handyman can help by shutting off the water supply to the system and draining any water from the pipes. If you have a more complex irrigation system, they may use compressed air to blow out any remaining water in the lines, ensuring that no water is left to freeze.

4. Inspect and Repair Any Damage

A good handyman will also take the time to inspect your outdoor plumbing for any signs of wear or damage. Cracks, leaks, or loose connections can worsen over the winter months if not addressed. By spotting these issues early, a handyman can make necessary repairs to ensure your plumbing is in good shape before the cold weather sets in.
